Diagnosis Confirmed ... Now What?

Rochelle Matthews-Somerville, PhD

March 2025  |  Diagnosis

You finally have answers. After months (or maybe years) of searching, testing, and advocating for your child — you finally have that diagnosis ... that diagnosis you have been waiting ... I mean dreading... no, waiting to hear.  You always knew -- but now, the confirmation! Maybe it’s ADHD ... or autism ... or dyslexia ... or maybe just a general learning difference. Allthestill, it’s a moment filled with mixed emotions—relief, fear, hope, uncertainty. You have clarity, but now the big question looms: What do I do next?

If your child has been in a traditional school setting, you may be told that special programs, accommodations, or services are what they need — and finally, will be available to support them. But at what cost? Are they a different kid just because they now have a label? Will they be seen as an individual with unique strengths and challenges, or will they be placed into a system with the intention of "fixing" them or fitting them into the closest mold that is available?

At this point, your mind may be racing a mile a minute.  Maybe you have already considered homeschooling, but now you’re wondering if you’re truly equipped to meet your child’s (special) needs? Or if you are already homeschooling, with a new diagnosis, you might now second-guess your "fit" as the best "teacher" for your child!

Let’s take a deep breath together.

You are not alone in this journey, and you are immeasurably equipped to guide your child, with or without a label

In fact, you have been their expert from the very beginning. Think about it ... at every pediatric appointment, how did the doctor get all the intimate details about your child. Yep, that was YOU!  When your child was learning to walk, who noticed their first wobbly steps and encouraged them to keep going? That was YOU! When they faced their first big emotions, who helped them navigate their feelings and find comfort? Again, that was YOU! Being their teacher is simply an extension of the role you’ve had all along.

Cultivating on Their Terms

Let's imagine for a moment that your child is a unique plant in a garden. Some children grow like sunflowers—tall, straight, and fast. Others are like vines, twisting and turning, needing a trellis to support them. Some are slow-growing trees, taking years before their first bloom, while others are wildflowers, thriving in unexpected places. A traditional education system often functions like a greenhouse—structured, standardized, and efficient. It works well for plants that fit neatly into rows. But what about those that need different soil, extra time, or specialized care?

That’s where homeschooling shines as an optimal educational option. Instead of forcing your child to conform to a preset curriculum and structure, homeschooling allows you to create an environment that nurtures your child’s natural growth. You can build an education plan that strengthens their abilities while giving them the support they need in challenging areas.

Pros and Cons of an Individualized Plan

Creating a personalized education plan for your child may initially feel overwhelming, but let’s break down some potential pros and cons.

A Natural Next Step

If you’ve been your child’s advocate, their cheerleader, and the person who understands them best, why should that change now? Homeschooling isn’t about doing school at home—it’s about crafting an education that truly fits your child. It’s about giving them the tools to flourish in their own way and time.

Will it take time? Yes! Will it be easy? No! Will it take effort? Yes. Will there be challenges? Absolutely. But just like tending a garden, the work you put in will yield a harvest—a child who knows they are valued, supported, and capable.

So, as you stand at this crossroads deciding what you should do or wondering if you are truly equipped, ask yourself: Do I want my child to fit into a system, or do I want to create an education that fits my child? If the latter speaks to your heart, this confirms that homeschooling might be the most rewarding path you’ll ever walk. And remember—you don’t have to do it alone. There is a thriving community of parents who have been where you are and are ready to walk this journey with you.  Find your village—those who will intimately support your family during both the successes and the challenging times.

Your child is a masterpiece in progress. Keep tending, nurturing, and believing in their potential. The garden you’re growing will be beautiful.
